HARRY WARING MARSUPIAL RESERVE ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION

Client: University of Western Australia
lOCATION: Harry Waring Marsupial REserve, weSTERN aUSTRALIA

Harry Waring Marsupial Reserve spans 280 hectares and is a Bush Forever reserve under State Government ownership, managed by the DBCA and leased by UWA since 1970.

The research requirements have ceased and the University is obligated to remove all buildings and infrastructure and restore the site to its pre-alteration state. This involved the demolition of five onsite structures including a laboratory, house and student quarters and associated infrastructure.

The project had significant challenges to ensure the protection of the significant fauna population and the preservation of the onsite flora. This involved a stage response with extra checks and measures to prevent the spread of dieback, prevention of fire and protection of onsite animals.

The subsequent phase entails environmental restoration, targeting the removal of non-native fauna and the replanting of vegetation on building and infrastructure sites to restore the reserve to its original state.
